One of Liberia’s reliable health facilities, Med Link Clinic located on Randall Street in Central Monrovia has warned strongly against the spreading of misinformation to the public by some media institutions in Liberia.
“If we must fight and win the battle against the Corona Virus, then we need to especially the media cross check our facts and do following ups as well as balancing of stories before dissemination to the public”, said a Lab- Supervisor at Med Link Clinic Philip V. Baysah.
The health institution’s clarification came few Days after a local daily reported that the third confirmed Corona Virus patient prior to the announcement of being positive of the virus passed through their health facility to seek treatment something Med Link termed as false and misleading.
According to Lab Technician Baysah, an authentic and credible records keeping system at their health facility shows clearly that the new and third confirmed corona virus patient in Liberia has never visited neither passed through their facility as was wrongly reported in the print media.
Addressing Journalists at a News Conference Saturday March 21, 2020 at its Randall Street office, Philip acknowledged that the role of the media in the current health crisis is very crucial but warned that misinformation which is not the actual representation of the facts could also be dangerous to effectively battle the pandemic.
Moreover, he named Aspen Medical Lab on the Tubman Boulevard, Lab- Clinic on Randall Street and the John F. Kenndy Memorial Hospital in Sinkor without the name of Med-Link as the three health facilities the third confirmed Corona patient visited before she was officially confirmed positive of the virus.
The young Liberian Lab technician indicated that the reporters need to be mindful of false and misinformation to the public during this current crisis because according to him it has the ability to cause psychological and traumatic stress on the population which may not be a good one for the Country.
Additionally, Philip recommended to national government to see the need to take some action against media institutions who will constantly spread falsehood and misinformation to the public during crucial health crisis in the Country.
Med Link clinic as part of its health and social responsibility in the wake of the health crisis has re-assured the public that it is overly prepared and is working to as well provide health related services to the general populace at all times and at the same time urged the public to remain safe and abide by all health preventive measures for the benefit of the Country.
