Deputy Minister for Press and Public Affairs at the Ministry of Information Jarlawa Tonpo ,has vowed to robustly transform gov’t information and communication strategies.

He also said usual verbal outburst against critical voices and opposition will also take a new trend from his office.

The Deputy Information Minister said, his office is not to attack the opposition or individual with different views on issues government is doing foolishly but rather to  work with all and provide the right information for the betterment of the country.

Tonpo promised to use his role to educate the public on the workings of the Liberian government, policies and programs.

Speaking when he took over his official role, the Former Liberian Senate Press Director pledged to communicate with relevant people before speaking, especially his immediate boss at the Information Ministry Ledgerhood Rennie , and will interact with people on policy issues politely, listen well and speak with facts.

Minister Tonpo suggested that the MICAT should ensure government information dissemination is coordinated in a way that there is a  channel for articulating government’s position on development and policy issues.

He said it is crucial to decentralize MICAT  and provide county contact persons to support county-wide engagement of government programs and policies, MICAT community engagement, taking MICAT into the community to regularly explain government plan policies.

He also suggested that reactivating the oversea press bureau at MICAT for a regular update from various embassies, monthly meeting of all government public relation officers to share notes on the development of their various institutions, ministries, and agencies as some vibrant efforts to boost information dissemination.

“I WILL ENGAGE THE PRESS UNION OF LIBERIA, MEDIA, COMMUNITY RADIOS, AND INTERNATIONAL MEDIA, ORGANISE CIVIL SOCIETY QUARTERLY MEETING, WOMEN GROUP QUARTERLY ENGAGEMENT, INTELLECTUAL CENTERS MONTHLY ENGAGEMENT, PRIVATE SECTORS ENGAGEMENT TO DISBURST GOVERNMENT INFORMATION AND POLICIES” Minister Tompo promised.

According to him, these engagements are in line with paragraph five of President Weah’s statement in the Pro-Poor Agenda for Prosperity and Development (PAPD) as he commended President George Weah for his appointment.

Speaking at the welcoming ceremony, Information Minister Ledgerhood Julius Rennie said, he was pleased to receive Mr. Tonpo as his assistant, and termed it a smart move by the President.

Hon. Renni encouraged his colleague to work in the interest of the Liberian people and at the same time appeal to Minister Tonpo not to change but to maintain his character .

“IF YOU ARE A PEPPER SOUP BE AS SUCH, IF YOU ARE A PALM BUTTER STAY AS PALM BUTTER, DO NOT BE LIKE PEPPER SOUP WHILE YOU ARE PALMBUTTER” Minister Rennie encouraged his deputy.

He wants Tonpo to see his job as a diplomat rather than those going around and making noise and stress truth-telling is very key especially when giving out information to the public.
