As Government Set to Conclude Agreement, Albino Society to Have Its Own Property Soon

The Liberia Albino Society appears to begin the new year on a very good footing with the assurance from National Government to purchase the current property which they are renting.

The Logan Town facility in District Fifteen Montserrado County which has been under rent for nearly a decade by the institution will this year be a personal property of LAS, disclosed madam Patricia N.C. Logan.

Speaking to reporters at a news Conference on Tuesday January 7, 2020 at her Logan Town office, the Executive Director of “LAS” explained that it has not been an easy task for them but was quick to commend national Government who is poised to bring relieve to her Institution.

According to her arrangements for the release of the funds in the tune of about 37,000usd is nearing completion.

The intervention by National Government through the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning and the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection among others came after the Institution in 2019 risked forceful eviction by the property owner for “LAS’s” failure to meet up with its financial obligation.

Madam Logan who could not hide her joy during the news conference Tuesday praised President George Weah and his administration who is poised to make another history in the Albinism community of Liberia.

She told reporters when finalized, the property will be a great help to them as it will among other things alleviate some of the financial burden from on the Institution.

The “LAS” boss stressed that the time for the struggle of her members and other vulnerable groups which they have assisted over the years is over as such, she again appealed to National Government to do more in order for them to reactive their programs which have been nonfunctional due to financial difficulties.

“LAS” she indicated will need a budget support of at least 150,000 United States Dollars annually to ensure she fully execute its primary programs namely: Medical Outreach, back to School, Feeding, Education/ Scholarships, Health Care Services and many others.

The Institution madam Logan narrated over the period provided fifty-five scholarships to deserving students including their members, provided feeding and medical outreach to children under five including baby mothers among others, but due to financial constrains they can no longer render such assistance anymore, this she appeals for Government swift intervention to ensure that “LAS” continues in its usual drive to buttress government effort.

Additionally, she wants national Government to continue its assistance to them by providing the usual Sun Glasses, Caps and many others especially during this current dry season where they usually experience difficulty with their sight.

The Albino Executive Director in Liberia explained that due to the sun rays, an Albino person normally get sick when he or she walks under the sun for about ten minutes without sun related protection, this she called for urgent attention from Government to have it addressed, because, they are part of the society and it will not be a good sign for the Country’s population when one segment of it is getting sick over the period.

According to her they will not sit on the fence this 2020 but will remain engaged in buttressing government efforts because the Country is for everyone and the contribution of all despite political, tribal or religious differences should be felt.

The Liberia Albino Society head noted that “LAS” has a robust plan for 2020 mainly by expanding its activities across the Country as such encouraged national Government to see the need to increase budget support to them.

Currently she intoned that their twenty-five bed room health facility project in Buchanan City Grand Bassa County is at a standstill due to financial challenge and wants the proper authority to see the need to assist them in order to complete such project as well as the implementation of other programs in 2020.

Unlike her Tanzania counterpart who received a budget support of 500,000usd, South Africa 1M, Kenya 1.5M among others,  their annual budget during former President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf administration was 195,000usd a dip in the bucket to operate compare to her African Counterparts, she noted and was again drastically slice to 85,000usd under the current administration led by President George Weah  due to financial challenge facing the nation and its people, however she wants government to do more in 2020/2021 respectively for the betterment of the Albinism society in Liberia.

“LAS” since its establishment in 2010 have two health facilities namely its headquarters in Logan Town and Bensonville clinic respectively and has been rendering free medical outreach as well as quality and reasonable health services to the vulnerable groups including its members and intends to do more with the support from National Government and other well-meaning partners especially under its decentralization programs because madam Logan added that Monrovia is not Liberia alone as her members and other vulnerable groups who are in dare need of their services are in the rural parts of the Country.
