Christopher Walker writes.
Barrack Young Controller ended their unbeaten run against Mighty Barrolle with a 2-0 victory on Wednesday, February 28, 2018 in a pre-season match at the Blue Field.
After a dominant one way first half drive in favor of the home side that ended goalless with the Blues hitting the goal post three times to the disbelief of their fans.
Sam Jackson opened the scoring with a curving shot from distance, which looped over the “Rollers” goalkeeper.
BYC doubled their lead three minutes to the end of the second half when Kelvin Potis headed home BYC’s second after a pinpoint cross from substitute William Freeman.
The goals prompted coach Kollie Kovah of Mighty Barrolle to introduced James Konuwah and Julius Wotoe in the second half to try to rescue the game, but they failed to bring the visitors to life.
The result means BYC-I who lost back to back games to Barrolle in the league last season have increase their pre-season record to 15 wins out of 17 matches played and two draws.
The victory did not only break BYC’s undefeated record but proves Robert Lartey new look team is said to be gradually picking up steam ahead of the new league season; though the dates for closing the 2016/17 and the opening of the 2018 national league have not been announce by the LFA.
Wednesday’s win ended the Barrolle “hoodoo” and earned BYC a very convincing victory outside of the national league.
Both teams had several shots on target during the match, but it was BYC who attempts who proves costly evidence of the fantastic two netted goals.
After a much aggressive start to the second half, the Blue Field came alive when Jackson ran into space and took a shot from 30 yards out which send the stadium into total celebration.
The boys from the barracks kept up the pace and exactly three minutes to the end of the encounter skillful Potis notched his seventh pre-season goals for BYC with a header.
Freeman’s right-wing cross whistled over the box and Potis rose up between the Barrolle defense to land a bullet header.
BYC offered little in attack after the goals, but they did not need to with extra time ticking to the end of the encounter.
Lartey went into the match with several of his players on the sideline including team captain Van-Dave Harmon who is suffering from malaria, Jeremy Saygbe, Abdulai Koulibaly, and Prince Jetoh all starters did not participate in the match.
The BYC coach continued with his new 3-5-2 system as Gideon William captained the team while David Tweh created several dangerous passes which as usual was a constant threat to Barrolle.
Goalkeeper Alpha Jalloh kept the home said in the match at both halves, producing a low stop to deny Konowah’s effort, before making a brilliant save from a rasping Woto shot from close range as Carlos William head a ball off the goal denying Barrolle a goal at the Blue Field.
On Tuesday, the junior team (BYC-II) defeated Downtown FC 8-3, with Robert Taylor scoring four goals (hat-trick +1) while Mark Gibson, Jestino Jackson, Christian Doe, and Adolphus Robert scored a goal each.
