Monrovia Club Breweries have been crowned champions of the LFA Petrol Trade Cup men’s segment following a triumphant victory over Watanga FC at the ATS on Sunday, 23 May.
Three first half goals were just enough to settle the score of the mouthwatering blockbuster between Breweries and Watanga.
The Bushrod Islanders came from a goal down to beat Watanga FC 2-1 courtesy of a goal each from Festus Blapoh and Sidiki Kromah.
Watanga’s in-form striker and highest scorer of the season in all competitions Augustin Otu sent the Paynesville giants in front with a wonderful goal at the opening parts of the first period.
It was not long when Blapoh made it leveled on the score sheet before Kromah netted in what turned out to be the match winning goal for Breweries just minutes before the break.
Fans of Watanga FC were desperately hoping for a turnaround in the final half of the contest, but the Beer Boys on the other hand were totally adamant about winning the game as they became more defensive in an effort to withstand the pressure from Watanga.
The second half put up some moments of classical football displayed with both sides lavishing couple of goal chances over the bars and in the safekeeping of the respective goaltenders.
The Islanders hanged on their dramatic first half lead till Hassan Corneh’s final whistle confirmed their tremendous victory over Watanga to be named champions. Breweries bagged L$1.5 million as prize money for winning the cup.
Watanga cashed home half of million Liberian Dollars for finishing as the runners up.
Aside taking home the sizable prize money, Club Breweries will now represent Liberia in the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Confederation Cup next season.
