CARITAS Monrovia Donates Cocoa Seeds to Farmers in Bomi County


A catholic relief and development organization, CARITAS has distributed cocoa seeds to several local farmers in Gbojay Town, Bomi County.

The distribution ceremony was full of praises as a batch of 20 farmers in Gbojay Town, Suehn Mecca District, received Cocoa seeds from CARITAS.

A beneficiary Varney Jabateh said, the cocoa seeds provided them free of charge will be properly protected and nourished to produce more cocoa in Liberia.

Varney outline lack of equipment, training, and agriculture seeds as major implement their ability to engage in farming. “Sometimes want to make farmer but there’s no means of getting equipment and seedings,” he said.

Speaking during the distribution of the seeds to farmers recently, the Administrative Assistant and Human Resource Officer of CARITAS Monrovia, Francis Williams said, the donation is aimed at empowering local farmers to have their own farms.

He said once farmers have their own farms, they will be able to generate finances from the products they sell, something that will sustain them.

“We will stand by your until your crops get mature, and we will make sure to find a buyer for you not to leave you alone,” Williams told the farmers.

Meanwhile, Suehn Mecca Statutory District Superintendent Rev. Marvin Moore praised CARITAS for the cocoa seeds giving to rural farmers in Liberia and promised to do their best in monitoring the farmers’ performance.

Mr Moore called on CARITAS to properly and continuously guide the farmers, saying “the beginning of everything is hard.”

Elijah Harris, Agriculture Technician of CARITAS, assured the farmers of continues partnership and training for them.

“CARITAS Monrovia has many projects around the country not only in Suehn Mecca District but we are also involved with cash and non-cash crops. We are involved with cocoa, palms, cassava among others.”
