The most publicized December 30, 2019 peaceful protest in Monrovia, Liberia under the leadership of the Council of Patriots headed by Henry Costa, had a dramatic shift to another day hours to today’s gathering.
International community which include, United States, ECOWAS and United Nations have been mediating with the government and protestors to work out modality aimed at making the country peaceful .
At a hastily arranged news conference Monday, COP head, Henry Costa said, his leadership received advise from the international community to reschedule their peaceful protest to Sunday January 5,2020 at the ATS sports facility in central Monrovia.
Said Henry Costa “The Council of Patriots wants to make it clear that it has not made any decision to call-off the protest, it is the intrusion of our foreign friends which they say they do out of our interest for our safety, because of the threat level in our country.”
Government of Liberian according to Mr. Costa committed to the international community that they will be properly prepared to provide the protesters security on said day.
“The government informed our partners that they don’t have the logistical support and man power to provide us the security today we need for the protest, said COP leader Costa .
He continued “As a result of that, our partners have suggested that we push the protest to January 5, 2020, at which time government vowed they would be empowered logistically to provide security for our people.”
However, COP said the day is not feasible for them as it is a holy day for their Christian brothers and sisters and also rejects the venue for the protest as well.
“If they can protect us on Sunday, they can protect us on Monday,” Henry said, while demanding Monday January 6, 2020 for the planned protest.
” This protest is not cancelled, we will never gather on Sunday or Friday again for any protest in respect for our Christians and Muslims brothers and sisters ” Said Henry Costa ,as he called on their supporters to remain peaceful always as leaders work out modalities to have a peaceful assembly soon.
Also speaking at the conference was Montserrado County Senator Abraham D. Dillon who called on the international partners to see reason to prevail on the Liberian government to do what is right for Liberia people .
However, early this morning there were huge pose of security officers mainly the Liberian National Police parading the streets of Monrovia.
