President George Manneh Weah has distributed Safety Life Jackets to Fishermen across Liberia’s Nine Coastal counties.
The President’s gesture to Fishermen comes amidst the reported increase in deaths among them on the atlantic ocean due to the absence of safety equipment on their boats or canoes .
Speaking when he Officially launched the “Free Life Jackets” Campaign on Friday, January 20, 2023, the Liberian Leader said, it was the beginning of Liberia joining other countries in ensuring that fishermen around the world are well protected.
Thousands of Fishermen gathered at the D Tweh Sports pitch in New Kru Town, Monrovia, to receive Safety Life Jacket through the kind gesture of the President .
The Liberian Chief Executive also used the occasion to call on fishermen across the country to use the safety gear for the intended purpose and to do so with care.
He noted that Fishermen play a very cardinal role in the growth and development of Liberia, as such, they must be provided the necessary safety gear as they carry out their functions.
“You are very important to us, and we want you to make sure that as you carry out this important task for society, you do so with utmost safety.”
President Weah Said, during his time as a Fisherman, not much attention was given to them something which prompted his unflinching support for protecting and equipping fishermen along the coastline.
The President also used the occasion to thank the National Fishery and Aquaculture Authority (NaFAA) and International partners for the great work being carried out.
He indicated that the NAFAA Boss, Emma Metieh Glassco is a complete example to prove that young people in Liberia are capable of leading the country to a better future.
