Int’l Friendlies: Liberia Squad Reduced By 2-Man, Players Tested COVID-19 Positive


Coach Peter Butler 22-man squad list has been affected with two players being ruled out after been tested positive for Covid-19.

LISCR FC’s midfielder, Armah Ayo Vaikanah and Morlik Keita of Mighty Barrolle were both withdrawn from the squad list on Sunday while departing for Tunisia, where they are going to face Mauritania and Libya.

Vaikanah was tested for the virus in Monrovia whilst goalkeeper Keita was confirmed in Accra, Ghana, where the team awaited their connecting flight to Istanbul, Turkey enroute to Tunis, where the matches will be played.

At the same time, the deputy coach Christopher Wreh and, administrative manager Sabastin Collins, have been confirmed positive for the virus. Vaikanah, Wreh and Collins are being quarantined in Monrovia.

A 30-man Liberia Football Association (LFA) delegation left Monrovia for Tunis, Tunisia on 6 June to honor the two international friendlies.

The delegation is headed by LFA Executive Committee (ExCo) member Nyemah Nyanway and includes Bea Mountain President Joseph Vincent, Assistant Sports Minister James B. Toe, Ministry of Finance and Development Planning director of budget Saye-Maye Cole and the News Newspaper sports editor Joseph Vincent.

Others are head coach Peter Butler, trainer George Gebro, goalkeeping coach Sunday Seah, kitman Tommy Johnson, team doctor Torsou Jallabah and masseur Sampson Zoegbeh.

Uncapped defenders Prince Balde and Othello Bah are among 10 foreign-based players invited for the trip. Midfielder Seth Kanteh Hellberg makes a return, having won his only two caps against Sierra Leone in the first round World Cup qualifiers in September 2019.

Defender Mark Pabai (Jong FC Utrecht, Netherlands), winger/midfielder Prince Saydee (Phoenix Rising FC, United States of America) and forwards Mohammed ‘Keka’ Kamara (Hatayspor, Turkey) and Sylvanus Nimely (HNK Gorica, Croatia) pulled-out of the friendlies due to personal/family reasons. Liberia will take on Mauritania on 11 June and Libya on 14 June in Tunis.

The Lone Star and Mauritania have met 8 times in international competitions. Liberia have won 3, drawn 1 and suffered 4 defeats. The last meeting between the two countries was on 23 July, 2017, in an African Nations Championship (CHAN) in Monrovia and Liberia won 1-0.

The only meeting between the Lone Star and the Mediterranean Knights of Libya was in an international friendly back on 27 May, 2008 and the Red, White and Blue lost 4-2.
