The Liberia Maritime Training Institute, today awarded its 1st associate degree in Marine Engineering. The degrees were awarded to 24 cadets including four females and twenty males from nearly all the 15 counties of Liberia. The Institute was established in 1979 under the auspices of the Mano River Union and later became Liberian own, but later went down due to several factors like the (Civil war, Ebola, inadequate funding) among others. LMTI offers Liberian Youth the opportunity to earn essential technical and leadership skills to enable them contribute positively to the transformation of Liberia. The Institution’s Associate Marine Engineering Degree program provides cadets training in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, as well as several other applied sciences.
Since 2016, the institution has had a new management whose vision is to restore LMTI stone age glory to the 21st century. At the graduation ceremony of 24 students who were conferred Associate Degree in Marine Engineering on Thursday, September 5, 2019, few of the graduates secured employment with esteem marine shipping companies out of Liberia, while others were awarded scholarship to seek further education abroad.
Serving as key note speaker, President George Weah congratulated the graduates and used the occasion to encourage the 24 cadets to pursue their professional aspirations and serve as proud ambassadors for Liberia.
The Liberian lauded LMTI for being an important contributor to actualizing his Pro-Poor Agenda for Prosperity and Development(PAPD) and as well thanked the Liberian International Ship and Corporate Registry (LISCR) for its commitment in managing the marine institution.
For his part, the Commissioner of the Liberia Maritime Authority (LMA), Dr. James Kollie described the first graduation as a monumental achievement. He then thanked LISCR saying “It is this healthy and meaningful partnership with you (LISCR) that has resulted in the transformation that we are seeing here today at LMTI. The Institution has transformed from a once battered and ravaged environment to a citadel of excellence and productivity”.
Also speaking was the Executive Chairman of LISCR. Mr. Elan Cohen applauded LMTI staff and cadets for transforming LMTI into what he refers to as “a world class training Institute”.
At the same time, LMTI Chairman, Mr. Avi Zaidenberg, extended thanks and appreciation to President Weah for his support to LMTI and his commitment to provide quality education to Liberian youth. He noted that; LMTI is excited to matriculate it’s 1st batch of cadets and hopes that the festive graduates exemplify positive change for the betterment of Liberia.
Meanwhile, the 24 graduates were selected from the over 200 young Liberians who applied for LMTI degree program after a rigorous scrutiny and evaluation processes.
