Nyonblee’s-Liberty Party Protest In Demand Of Political Legitimatization

Partisans of Senator Nyonblee Kangar Lawrence’s fraction Of the Liberty Party, on Friday, October 28, 2022, protested against what they called the continued display of arrogance and delay in complaints filed by the Political Leader of the party to the National Election Commission.

The fraction also complained about the unwarranted interference in the internal administrative matters of the institution.

The supporters began assembling at the headquarters of the National Elections Commission, in what it says to ‘conduct a peaceful protest’.

Sen. Karanga-Lawrence LP-Faction subscribed as a ‘conventional judicial process, the NEC was resolving contending issues, which it has utilized over the past several months, it now feels compelled to utilize a series of meta-legal actions to compel compliance of the National Elections Commission in the ongoing Liberty Party saga.

Liberty Party stated that from all indications, the Party is convinced that the Chairperson of the National Elections Commission, Madam Davidetta Browne-Lansanah, and a few others on the Board of Commissioners, are complicit with Mr. Musa Hassan Bility, the embattled chairman of the Party in causing incessant embarrassment for the party as a way of rendering it inconsequential to the 2023 General and Presidential Elections.

The Party refers to the refusal of NEC to recognize and log the corrected version of its 2021 Constitution portions of which had been unilaterally altered by Chairman Bility to enable him to carry out a series of bogus actions, including the suspension of credible and productive leaders of the party, following the Gbarnga Convention of January 2021.

This, according to the Senator’s Fraction, prompted the immediate intervention of the Supreme Court of Liberia under whose guidance both Chairman Bility and Senator Lawrence, in presence of NEC’s lawyer, corrected the flawed Constitution in line with the Farmington Memorandum of Understanding.

Since receiving the Constitution in its proper version, the NEC, under the supervision of Madam Davidetta Browne-Lansanah, has refused to recognize the instrument and instead continues to carry out dubious activities in partnership with Chairman Bility.

Liberty Party and its many partisans and supporters will now convey appropriate actions to the doorsteps of the NEC as a way of demonstrating our resistance to the partisan posture of that institution.

The protest climaxed with several presentations of a petition to international partners, drawing their attention to various actions of NEC that show its complicity with the embattled chairman Bility.

For months, it seems like a football match between the two leaders of the party whose referee is at large leaving the two opposing teams to duke out their differences in the full glare of spectators.

But the two leaders have had a long-running brawl – each trying to wrestle the party from the other, to the point where, Bility as Chairman, has “suspended” Karnga-Lawrence and in return, the senator, as a political leader, has nullified Bility’s chairmanship.

On December 9, 2022, at a called press conference to announce the “nullification” of Bility’s chairmanship, Sen. Karnga-Lawrence claimed that her action was based on a report by a Special Investigative Committee, which uncovered that the election that brought Bility to power was ‘marred by procedures errors.

“We must take responsibility to make the necessary corrections in line with our value of following the rule of law.

Given the findings of the Special Investigation Committee which incorporated testimonies of the major actors in the planning and execution of the Convention, and acting in line with Article Five Section 1 (d) of the 2015 Constitution which designates the Political Leader as the Convener of the Special National Convention, we hereby declare the Convention of January 21-23, 2021 nullified,” the ‘suspended’ political leader declared.

However, before the ‘nullification’ of Bility’s chairmanship, he (Bility) had declared Senator Nyonblee Karnga-Lawrence ‘suspended’ from the position of a political leader, for being in arrears of party dues, to the tune of some US$18,000. He threatened to expel her from the party if the full amount was not paid within the period January to December 2022 Bility claimed that his action is backed by Article IX of the Liberty Party’s 2021 Constitution.
