Orange Liberia launched 2018 Liberia National Inter High School debate competition.


Liberia’s number one secondary intellectual competition, the National Inter High School debate competition has been officially launched by Orange Liberia.

The intellectual discourse unlike in the past took a decentralization pattern specifically in Kakata City Margibi County.

Several participating schools were in full attendance to grace their own opening program.

This year’s event will see students from seven of Liberia’s fifteen Counties stressing intellectual mussels during the period under review.

Some of the participating Counties are:Montserrado, Margibi, Grand Bassa, Bong, Nimba and Grand Cape Mount.

Serving as chief launcher of the program was Orange Liberia Corporate Communications Strategist Dr. Kimmie Weeks who encouraged the students to see education as important to their well-being.

He wants them to always remain focused and committed to their educational sojourn.

In a more motivational tune Dr. Weeks urged the talented students not to allow peer pressure, economic challenges to sway them from achieving their desired goals in life.

“Be steadfast, unmovable, dedicated, selfless and follow good examples, by that he added they will reap their harvest.

He told them that it is never to late to start something nothing that they should begin now.

Also speaking at the program was Assistant Education Minister for secondary and Basic Education Felicia the Doe Somah who pledge the Ministry’s support to such meaningful endeavor.

She called on the students to always strive for excellence and serve as role module for their fellow colleagues .

“Do your best because what you are currently doing will help you practically tomorrow especially when you shall have occupied public offices” she added.

As part of the Ministry’s agenda under the pro-poor government Madam Does Somah told the gathering that in the coming days officials of the Ministry led by the Minister Ansu Sonii will get in the field to take education to the direct stakeholders.

This she noted when fully done will address some of the challenges of the sector.

The educative program was birth in 2014 under the banner Youth For Change inc.

It was as a result of the infamous super Friday activities where school going children on this day flood the streets caring on unwholesome acts instead of learning their lessons.

The program was launched by then Cellcom GSM Company with twenty schools participating subsequently it extended to eight schools respectively.

Alex Devine the brain of the initiative also saw the need through his team to make the program more attractive

There by introducing individual categories to include:Best eloquent student, quality writing and arguments from informed background categories among others.

Due to that creativity from the organizers several students took on the challenge and were recognized for their splendid performances over the past years.

In December of 2017 outstanding students from the competition were selected to participate in an African debate competition in South Africa.

As a result of their skills and talents exhibited during the competition Liberia set a new record for being the first Country and team in the competition to win two games in roll and five out if eight games played respectively.

Additionally Liberia came first out of the West African Countries that were represented at the competition.

The launching program of course ended with a mini debate from the foreign based debators who recently returned home with two awards.

The teams were drawn into two, team a and team b with the topic:Foreign investors seeking to invest in Liberia must require a Liberian partnership to invest in Liberia.

The debate was so very competitive especially with two classical sides stressing intellectual mussels but at the end of the day after defending both arguments team a won team b with 88.7 to 85 points respectively.

Meanwhile the competition will begin next week at several venues as fixtures have been distributed to the participating teams while practices are said to be ongoing.

Under the sponsorship of Orange Liberia several prizes according to Dr. Weeks will be presented to the best teams and debaters among others.
