While the legislature is going through the Arcelor Mittal 800 million Mineral Development Deal (MDA), two organizations are exerting persistent effort in support of the rectification of the deal.
In continuation of their advocacy for the deal to be rectified, Partner for Sustainable Development (PaSD) and Coalition of Youth and Students for Better Linaria (COYSBL) on Thursday, December 9 2021 presented a joint statement to the Legislature.
According to the organizations, the investment encompasses processing, rail, and port facilities development and will be one of the largest mining projects in West Africa.
They argued that the Arcelor Mittal MDA contains social obligations such as free health care, education, housing which “should be the reasons for rectification”.
The coalition of Youth and Students for Better Liberia and Partners for Sustainable Development in their joint petition noted that the Government of Liberia signed the Deal in 52 weeks which provides an adequate and convincing reason for its rectification.
Meanwhile, the organizations have preferred recommendations which they believe will help speed up the process with logic and fairness for Liberia and the company.
In the petition presented to the Legislature, PaSD and COYSBL stated that if some provisions do not suit the country in the Arcelor Mittal Mineral Development Agreement, policymakers, leaders, and senior citizens should conduct a consultation to determine an effective solution.
” We strongly hold the opinion that the many inflammatory statements against the company operations, especially from some senior citizens and national leaders, have the propensity to incite citizens in concession areas into violence,” they said.
The institutions through their petition informed the legislature that ” rejection of the company’s request for expansion should not be an option, as doing so could cost Liberia to lose a minimum of 80 million in annual revenue, 300 new jobs, an additional half a million dollars to the affected communities”.
The advocacy organizations are opting that the legislature will see the need for investment which they believe can be portrayed by their action towards the Arcelor Mittal Mineral Department Agreement(MDA).
It can ve recalled, President George Weah weeks ago presented the communications to the House of Representatives and Senate for the rectification of the deal.
The agreement according to the President’s Communications to the Legislature was done in 52 weeks between the executive branch and the conpany.
As per legislative power, the Legislators now have the power to do thorough insight about the agreement.
This will inform the lawmakers to rectify or reject the proposed agreement.
