Liberia President George Weah on December 18th 2020 switched on the National Christmas Tree light.

Speaking at the ceremony, President Weah said, the lighting of the National Christmas Tree is the  official beginning of the festive  Seasons, when members of the Christian faith around the world celebrate the birth of the Lord Jesus Christ.

According to the President the event, which took place over two (2) centuries ago, has always been commemorated as a time of joy, happiness, fellowship, goodwill, and peace.

Mr Weah noted that, as we celebrate  we must also reflect on the terrible devastation suffered by all peoples and nations of the world since last year’s Christmas, which was caused by the advent of the deadly Coronavirus pandemic.

The Liberian leader added that, within a year, the virus has infected million people around the globe, and has caused the untimely death of people

He said, even though new vaccines have been recently developed that should possibly bring this pandemic under control,

The world is beginning to witness a second wave of infections that appears to be more deadly than ever before.

Mr Weah asked that, everyone should be thankful to the Almighty God, that He has spared Liberia from the extremes of this global pedemic. “we have been able to implement measures that have enabled us to contain the pandemic and minimize its negative effects on our people”, the President noted.

The President said, the Almighty Lord has guided and strengthened the hands and given courage to the hearts of Liberian doctors, nurses, and other care givers who are on the frontline of the struggle with COVID-19.

“We salute you, and applaud you all”, President Weah thanked health practitioners.

President George Weah thanked International and bilateral partners for their cooperation, goodwill, and support given to the Government in keeping the Nation safe.

The President said, as the nation celebrate the Christmas, Liberians must reflect on the blessings that God has bestowed upon them as a Nation and as a People.

He said,the country have been faced with many challenges this year, but God Almighty has guided the state through trouble times, and have safely guide the country to a peaceful shore.

President Weah urged all Liberians to reach out to each other, as they share the joy that Christmas brings to the World.

He also encouraged everyone to extend a hand of friendship to each other, forgive one and other, and be each brother’s keepers, above all, let there be Peace among us, and Goodwill between us.

The Liberian leader encouraged citizens to put the challenges of this Covid-19 year behind, and look to the future with confidence, and with the hope that there are better days ahead.

Mr Weah appealed to his country men to resolve to overcome their difficulties and differences, and work together to take the Nation to a brighter future.

The President warned that, Coronavirus is still an ever-present threat to the health and well-being of the citizens, and urged everyone to be careful as they gather for celebrations, and take all necessary precautions, and strictly observe all health protocols as published by the Ministry of Health.

The President wished all Liberian a Merry Christmas, a Happy and Prosperous New Year as he switched on the Christmas light in Monrovia, Liberia.
