Special Senatorial Election: 118 Candidates Vying for 15 Seats

One hundred and eighteen (188) candidates will contest for the 15 senatorial seats in the upcoming December 8 elections.

The National Elections Commission (NEC) announced the final list of qualified candidates at a press conference on Tuesday, November 18, following the lifting of the stay order placed on electoral activities by the supreme court of Liberia. The campaign has been declared open and will end on December 6, 2020.

With 19 days left to the holding of the Special Senatorial and Representative By-elections, over two million citizens are expected to go to the polls to elect new senators or maintain their incumbents.

Of the 188 candidates, 20 are females, representation less than ten percent of the candidates.

As for candidates contesting the by-elections, “the list for the District #9, Montserrado County By-election has a total of 8 Candidates. The list for the District #2, Sinoe County By-election also has a total of 8 Candidates,” NEC chairperson Davidetta Browne Lansanah said.

Madam Lansanah also called on candidates to go about their campaign activities peacefully in order to avoid electoral violence.

“Please avoid rancor and bitter exchanges. Show respect for each other as you go about your campaign activities in line with the code of conduct concerning campaign activities.

Please note that the NEC takes seriously the submission of campaign schedules by all Political Parties and Independent Candidates as per the campaign requirements issued to all aspirants during the Candidates’ Nomination Period. The Commission will give full priority on a first-come, first-serve basis to all Political Parties and Independent Candidates who have already submitted their Campaign schedules. Absolutely, no two parties or candidates will be allowed to launch their campaigns or close their campaigns on the same day,” madam Lansanah said.
