The Unity Party unequivocally supports the establishment of the War and Economic Crimes Court as recommended by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Liberia.
The Party believes that those who allegedly committed war crimes, crimes against humanity and looted the country’s resources (both financial and natural) for personal riches at the expense of the poor majority during the long period of civil crises must be given the chance to exonerate themselves before the War and Economic Crimes Court.
Victims of the carnage that engulfed Liberia are still reeling from the unprecedented high level of trauma as a result of torture (both psychological and physical), murder, rape and other vices that characterized the 14-year civil conflict while the alleged perpetrators parade the corridor of powers in the country.
If Liberia is to truly heal and come to terms with the civil conflict, justice must prevail for atrocities that were committed during those 14 long years and the years preceding the 1990s.
The party also believes that the establishment of the War and Economic Crimes Court is in the interest of the rule of law and will discourage the culture of impunity.
The Unity Party was founded to promote, protect and enhance the peace and security of Liberia and its people; to foster and maintain reconciliation and stability; to promote, be committed to and secure to all Liberians their fundamentals rights, as enshrined in the constitution of the Republic of Liberia.
The party therefore encourages its Legislators to champion the cause in the Legislature for the establishment of the court in line with international human rights standards.
We also call on all of Liberia’s international partners to support the people of Liberia in their quest for justice and bring an end to the culture of impunity that has long since become a normal.
